Individul lessons

"I really love my cello lessons with Joanna because they are fun and make me feel happy. She helps me when things are difficult and always makes me believe I can do it. I love playing in concerts and group classes with my friends too!" (Martha, 7 years old)

I believe that music lessons should be a place where students feel supported, inspired, and free to grow both musically and personally. In my individual lessons, I aim to create a warm and encouraging environment where confidence, curiosity, creativity, and enjoyment of music-making can naturally develop alongside strong technical foundations.

Every student is different, and I tailor lessons to each individual’s personality, pace, goals, and way of learning. I teach children from the age of 3 through to adults — from complete beginners to advanced and pre-professional students. Alongside instrumental technique and musicianship, I place particular emphasis on listening, expression, imagination, and building a healthy and positive relationship with performing.

For younger students, I use a wide range of creative and visual resources — from colourful charts and games to stickers and imaginative activities — helping children stay engaged while developing strong musical foundations in a joyful and natural way. For students of all ages, I regularly use recordings, listening exercises, and musical storytelling to stimulate imagination, develop musical sensitivity, and encourage expressive playing from the very beginning.

As both a cellist and pianist, I also enjoy accompanying my students during lessons, either on the piano or on the cello. Making music together helps students develop listening skills, ensemble awareness, confidence, and a stronger sense of musical communication. I am also happy to advise students on choosing or renting a suitable instrument.

Lessons usually take place weekly and are typically one hour long, although shorter lessons are available and often recommended for younger children. I mainly teach in students’ homes, as I find this can help younger students feel comfortable and relaxed, but lessons can also be arranged at my teaching space in Highgate or at my home studio.

I prepare students for ABRSM examinations in cello, piano, and music theory, as well as auditions and entrance exams for junior departments, conservatoires, and universities. Over the years, my students have successfully gained places at institutions including the Junior Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, and Guildhall School, as well as receiving scholarships and prizes in competitions.

My teaching is strongly influenced by my work as founder of Mind for Strings and Mind for Stage, and for younger students I also incorporate elements of the Kodály approach through singing, movement, rhythm work, improvisation, and listening activities. I want students not only to become skilled musicians, but also confident, expressive, and thoughtful young people who genuinely enjoy making music.
